Founded in 1978, Studio Theatre is Washington’s premier producing venue for contemporary theatre. Having anchored the revitalization of Washington, DC’s historic 14th Street corridor, today Studio stands as one of the city’s leading cultural organizations, committed to artistic innovation, education and professional development, and to robust engagement with our community.
Studio Theatre’s Board of Directors plays a critical role in the leadership and stewardship of the organization. The Board is made up of dedicated volunteers with diverse backgrounds and expertise who share a love of theater, apply their skills and networks to support Studio’s unique mission, and serve as our ambassadors to the larger DC community.
We are actively seeking new Board members who want to help steer the future of our unique institution and the future of contemporary theatre in Washington. If you are interested in applying, or know someone you would like to nominate, we want to hear from you!
The Studio Board offers a rewarding opportunity to become an insider in the vibrant DC arts community: to connect more deeply with the art, engage personally with Studio executives and talent, observe and participate in the behind-the-scenes running of the theatre and production of the shows, and work closely and connect with other theatre lovers.
You should consider applying if you:
Love theatre and appreciate what it brings to our community and our society
Enjoy working collaboratively with other interesting, committed arts supporters
Bring professional experiences relevant to the governance of a highly respected, nonprofit performing arts organization. In particular, this may include:
Human resources management
Finance
Real estate
Education
Development and fundraising
Community engagement
Local DC government relations
Business management and/or operations
Arts or nonprofit management
Equity, diversity, and inclusion leadership
Communications and marketing
Bring personal experiences and perspectives that would further expand the diversity of the Board. People of all races, cultures, faiths, gender identities, ages, and abilities are encouraged to apply.
Be willing and able to devote time and talent to Studio Theatre, and to make a financial commitment at a level that is meaningful to you. Applicants should be prepared to attend Board meetings (four or five three-hour meetings per year) and committee meetings, opening nights of Studio productions, the annual fundraising event and other periodic events.
Please click here to apply for a Board membership or to nominate another individual to join the Board. (If nominating another individual, before submitting the form please inform the person that you will be nominating them.)
We will inform you via email that we have received your application. You (or the individual you have nominated) will be contacted to schedule an initial informational call via phone or videoconference. Applicants are then screened by the Membership Committee of the Board, and may also meet with the Executive Director and/or Artistic Director.
Applications are formally evaluated based on each applicant's qualifications and the Board's current needs and priorities. If an applicant is not asked to join the Board, it is not necessarily a reflection of their qualifications or the Board's interest in working with the individual! We are grateful to all applicants and appreciate their time and interest.
