The Studio Theatre’s Apprentice Program is a rigorous but rewarding 50-week opportunity for on-the-job career training and experience. It is designed to enhance students’ education by providing invaluable real life work experience that helps to bridge the gap between experience in the academic theatre and a career in professional theatre. With the chance to work alongside the finest professionals in the best contemporary theatre in the Nation’s Capitol, the program is dedicated to early career development in specific areas of specialization and also offers the opportunity to gain knowledge in the workings of other areas of the theatre resulting in a well rounded experience.
Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the program has nine areas of specialization:

Public Relations and Communication

Literary/Public Programs
Carpentry/ Scene shop
Stage Management
Production/Company Management
Production/Electrics
Operations/ Facility Management
All apprentices participate in group projects as well as individual department exchanges that allow the chance to see first hand the roles that various departments play. The schedule is rigorous. Apprentices work a 40-hour week and also participate in both department activities and theatre wide activities that may require working evenings and/or weekends.
PERKS
Educational seminars with topics such as: Literary and casting; Technical theatre; Education and outreach; Front of house and the audience; Fundraising; PR and marketing; Starting and running a theatre.
Social events that are also educational. Hosted by board members, previous social events have included a guided tour of Washington DC, a chance to experience live programming at NPR, tours of other major theatres in the area, and an outing to a Nationals game.
Apprentices can see any Studio Theatre production as often as they wish and are also able to see many Washington DC area theatre productions for FREE.
Two guest comps for each Studio Theatre production.
Apprentices are entitled to a 50% reduction in tuition for classes and workshops at The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.
Single or double occupancy housing that is located within a few minutes of walking distance from the theatre, in the heart of the exciting Dupont Circle area, Butler House, named after Susan L. Butler- Board Chair, is the theatre’s newly renovated historical residence. It has fully furnished apartments each with full kitchen. It also has a rooftop deck, a common room for social activities and on-the-premises laundry facilities.
Bi-weekly stipend
Employment consultation, resume counseling and networking opportunity for job placement.
Upon completion of the program, apprentices have gone on to establish careers working in various professional theatres around the country, including The Studio Theatre.

FOR THE 2009-2010 SEASON:
BUSINESS APPRENTICE
Responsibilities include:
Assisting with accounts payable activities for the Theatre
Assisting with preparation for the Theatre’s annual audit
Assisting with budgeting process for the theatre
Assisting with budgeting process for the Business department
Help maintain Department filing and record keeping
Assisting in the day-to-day needs of the Business department
Additional projects assigned based on skill level
Full time position with stipend

OPERATIONS/ FACILITY MANAGEMENT APPRENTICE.
Responsibilities include:
Support all operations of the Theatre
Assist with accounting records
Assist with space use and contractor scheduling

Assist the Facilities Manager with the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Studio Theatre buildings and equipment
Full-Time with stipend
This position does not provide housing

STAGE MANAGEMENT APPRENTICE
This position is filled
The Apprentice will work with equity Production Stage Managers, as well as the entire production department team, led by the Theatre’s Associate Producing Artistic Director. Apprentice will be in direct contact with actors, designers, directors and Theatre leadership. When not in rehearsal, apprentice may work in Production and in other departments or on special projects depending on skills, interest and necessity.

PRODUCTION/ ELECTRICS APPRENTICE
This position is filled
Responsibilities include:
Program ETC Express Board with professional designers for at least 7 productions
Support Master Electrician in light hang, focus, strike and general maintenance
Light Board Operator for at least 7 productions
Support Master Electrician for all sound system setup, strike, and maintenance
Participate in special projects for the production department
Provide assistance to production shops as needed
Previous experience programming light boards required
Familiarity with Clearcom, SFX and QLab software a plus
Must be comfortable at heights on ladders and catwalks.

The interns below will work on The Studio Theatre 2ndstage summer production and/or The Studio Theatre production in one of the following positions:
Run Crew
Help coordinate scene changes
Costumes changes and maintenance, and prop tracking
This is ideal for a student who is interested in and has previous experience in Stage Management and/or run crew.
Light Board Operator
Run the light board for all performances
Help maintain the light design
Work as the assistant to the Master Electrician
Assist with hang and focus
Sound Board Operator
Run the sound board for all performances
Help maintain the sound design
Assist in sound hangs and installs
Assist the sound Designer as needed
Must have significant experience in sound engineering/live mixing
Follow Spot Operator
Run follow spot for all performances of 2ndStage summer show
Assist with maintenance of all lighting equipment in use
Assist with hang and focus for productions as needed
Please refer to the plays section of our website for information on the summer production.
Productions require evenings and weekend commitment and represent half of the total time commitment. Students who work on a production (above) will complete the other half of their time commitment by working in one of the following areas:
Paints and props- Assist the set and props designers for The Studio Theatre as well as The Studio Theatre Secondstage. Students must have experience and skill in paints and props.
Production Administration- Assist the Production department in casting, auditioning, database management, files maintenance and day-to-day operations of the department.
Facilities- Assist the Facilities Manager in the day-to-day and periodic maintenance for the theatre. Inventory of the theatres’ equipment and appliances. Maintenance of the theatre’s housing facilities.
